Things to Do in Cebu: Olango Wildlife Sanctuary in Olango Island

One of the fantastic highlights and attractions in Cebu is the Olango Island, where you can enjoy the white sand beaches, the enchanting underwater adventure, and if you are inclined to bird watching, spend a great time watching migratory birds in this magical Island, just 5 kilometers from Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu, Philippines.

The Island is situated between the Camotes Island to the south and the Bohol Straight to the north. Aside from its mesmerizing pristine beaches, the Olango Island is ideal for scuba diving and outdoor adventures for nature lovers, which simple makes the place a Cebu top tourist destination.

Olango Wildlife Sanctuary
The sanctuary has been considered by environmentalists as a major refueling station for about 40,000 migratory birds, which come from various neighboring countries such as Japan, China, and Siberia. The birds flock to Olango for refuge during the winter climate of those mentioned countries.

The best time for bird watching in Olango Wildlife Sanctuary is during the months of September, October and November. These are the months when the birds stop at the Island on their way to Australia. Also the months of February, March and April when the birds make a stop again on their way back to their original habitats.

There’s an entrance fee of P100 for foreigners and P20 for locals if you want to enter the Sanctuary. The fund will ne used for maintaining the place. Bring with you a camera. A good zoom with 300 mm+ is recommended. If you are into commercial photography, there will be an additional fee of P500.

How to Get to Olango Island

It’s easy to get to Olango Island. If you arrived from the Mactan International Airport, just take a metered taxi or jeep bound to Punta Engano. The fare for the jeep is only P10. It is best to tell the driver where you want to go.

Your stop will be near the Hilton Hotel or Movenpick Hotel compound. From there, you can go to the wharf where motorized bancas are waiting.
